CHAPTER SEVEN

The next day during her lunch break, Dyan took Luna on her leash to the dog park. Luna bounded over to sniff a Border collie mix—a beautiful black and white dog with flopped-over ears. Luna led the other dog over to Dyan as if introducing them. Laughing, she took turns and rubbed both dog’s bellies. Then she saw it. Oh, my. Is that what I think it is?

Yep, clear as day. There, in the dark fur against the white—the heart shape.

She’d heard so many stories about the legend of Match, the matchmaking dog who brought soulmates together. People came from faraway places just to get a glimpse of this dog. And here she was, friends with Luna. The dogs turned and ran through the park side by side as Dyan watched them romp. They certainly were having a good time.

Milt McPherson sat down on the bench next to Dyan and watched the dogs, too. “I see your dog is enjoying playing with Match. Thought I’d give Luke and Bliss a break and bring her here. She loves to socialize.”

“Hi, Milt, it’s been a long time. How are you?” She gave Milt a friendly hug. Milt had been her grandparent’s lawyer since she could remember.

“I’m doing well, getting ready to hang up my shingle. I’ve been in the business too long.” He laughed as if he’d made the biggest joke. She remembered he liked to cut up and have fun with Samuel when she was a kid. He was the one who always pulled a quarter from behind her ear.

“I heard about what happened to you. How’s your arm doing?” Milt asked.

“It’s healing, but I can’t wait to get this cast off.” The sooner, the better. My arm itches like crazy. She hesitated for a minute and glanced at Milt. “Since you’re still practicing law...” Maybe she could ask Milt about the buried pioneers.

“Only part-time these days. Life is short and I have other interests.”

“I can understand that,” Dyan said. “Good for you.” She bit her lip. “If you don’t mind, may I run something by you to get your opinion?”

“Sure, what’s on your mind?”

She quickly brought Milt up to speed on the possible sale of the Barlow Ranch. “Do you have any ideas how to solve this dilemma?”

“I’d suggest you call the neighboring rancher who doesn’t seem to have a problem with the gravesite on his ranch. See if he’s willing to make a deal with Barlow. Barlow could donate, say, a half-acre of land that includes the gravesite to the neighbor. The two graves would be together and protected in the future. In return, the neighbor could donate a half acre on the back half of the ranch. They’d still own the same amount of land when it’s all said and done. That is, if the neighbor is willing.”

“Perfect. That’s a great idea. I’ll call Barlow when I get back to the office and find out what kind of terms he’s on with his neighbor. Thank you.”

“My pleasure. I wouldn’t want to split them up.
